Two-Factor Authentication – What is it?Gavin DiMasi
A lot of people ask me what two-factor authentication (or multi-factor authentication) is. So I’d like to explain what it is, how it works and how it can benefit your business.
Securing your login with a password is a single factor of authentication. A second factor of authentication confirms your identity and will keep your information secure even if your password has been compromised.
Here’s how it works:
- You enter your username and password as you would normally,
- A code will be sent to your smartphone either by text message or via a dedicated authentication app,
- Enter the code into the system and now you have access!
It’s that simple.
The process ensures only someone with your personal device can access your information. Most online services provide two-factor authentication free as a part of their service.
